How do I decide whether I want private lessons or group lessons?
There are several major differences between private lessons and group lessons:
- The cost – group lessons are cheaper
- The group size – the fewer people in the group the more individual attention each person will receive. You can have up to a maximum of eight people in private sessions with First Tracks. Private lesson prices are shown for 1 – 3 or 1 – 5 people depending on the duration, if you want to add extra people (friends or family etc.) to your group a supplement is applied upon booking.
- Meeting and finish points – for private lessons whenever possible we adapt the meeting point so that it’s convenient for you. For example for half day or full day lessons your instructor can come pick you up from wherever you are staying and help you put your boots on (if you need help). Group lessons have a set meeting point. With private lessons you decide where you would like to end the lesson, it might be back at your chalet or it might be at a mountain restaurant. We’re happy to do this as long as the instructor has enough time to get to his next lesson.
- Some kids (or adults!) may have more fun in a group.
Is there a difference between having lessons in the morning and the afternoon?
This is a personal preference but there are other points to consider. If you’re an early bird you may prefer to take morning sessions, if you like to lie in and tend to make the most of the après-ski then afternoons are a good idea. Afternoon sessions are cheaper than morning sessions as we receive fewer requests for afternoons. The slopes are quietest between 12:30 and 14:30 when the majority of people stop for lunch.
Do snow conditions change during the day?
Snow transforms (changes) when temperatures change (rise or drop). During the day temperatures tend to rise and then drop again in the evening, this phenomenon tends to become more obvious towards the Spring (March & April). Some people believe that teh best snow can be found in the morning, with experience we know that a crucial factor is also “where” you ski. Depending on the orientation (north, south…) the snow can change only slightly (north facing) or massively (south facing) throughout the day.
Our instructors and coaches will find the best snow available on the mountain regardless of the time of day.
Do I need to take out insurance ?
Our prices do not include the ski pass or insurance. You must be insured to take lessons / guiding with us. When you buy your ski pass you will be offered insurance at a cost of around 2 € per day per person. We strongly recommend the insurance cover that is offered by the lift companies, you may also have subscribed travel insurance upon booking your holiday which is also a good solution.
Are there quiet times on the slopes?
Yes, in Courchevel slopes are often quiet(er) outside of French and British school holidays. Lift queues are rarely a problem even at the busiest times of the winter thanks to the modern high-tech lift system. Our instructors and guides also know which slopes are the quietest even during the school holidays. The quietest time of day on the slopes is generally between 12:30 and 14:00 whilst most people are having lunch.
What happens if I don't like my instructor / group?
There’s always a solution! For group lessons we’ll move you to another group or we can also offer to put the sum paid towards private sessions. For private sessions whenever possible we’ll switch your instructor (if possible).
From what age is it possible for children to learn to ski?
In private lessons sometimes children can grasp the basics at 2 and a half but this depends greatly on the character and strength of the child. Most ski schools only accept children from the age of 3. From experience, the children who are used to going to creche / school are the asiest for us to work with as they’re used to being away from their parents. Our priority is that it is fun and that they want to do more. Our instructors both male and female are trained with teaching skills that work, kids have a great time with us!
Do I have to reserve a minimum number of lessons?
We always encourage clients to book a series of sessions as we believe that this gives the best results, but how many sessions you book is ultimately up to you. During peak weeks we have limited availability and recommend booking as much in advance as posisble.
How can I pay for lessons?
We accept payment by the following credit cards; VISA, Mastercard and American Express. We also accept payment by bank transfer and for lessons and guiding booked in resort upon arrival we accept cash.
